A Good Neighbor

Inspired by the 15th İstanbul Biennial, I designed my classroom (Turkish as a foreign language) with the examples of the flyers of the event.

Completing a reading text on neighbor relationships (İstanbul Yabancılar için Türkçe Ders Kitabı B1) in the course book, students were introduced to the biennial and shown the flyers around the walls. After brainstorming on the characteristics of a good neighbor, students produced their posters in groups.

We can apply this into our English classrooms as a follow-up activity when we teach “Relative Clauses”. Introducing the the biennial, we can ask our students to brainstorm on the question “What makes a good neighbor?” on Slido, which is an interactive Web 2.0 tool. Then, we can have our students analyze the sentences on the biennial webpage and underline relative clause structures in the sentences.

Is a good neighbour someone you rarely see?

Is a good neighbour someone who just moved in?

Is a good neighbour reading the same newspaper as you?

Then, we can give the poster handouts (you can prepare one on a word document like in the examples.) to the students so that they can prepare their own posters like in the examples.

Alternatively, we can ask our students to make observations outside for a week and capture a photo as an answer to the question “What makes a good neighbor?”. Then, they can bring the photos to the class and create their posters explaining their photos.
